Bill has put his essay on the line. It reads pretty well actually, you can see the man through the words. It’s one of those things that AI can never do.
I’m putting the essay here as I believe its important. He genuinely comes from a place of concern.
It doesn’t say much about education. What stood out is the jobs that will be left will involve skills that take many years to learn. The whole idea of credentialism in education appears shakely in light of this. His prediction for employment are astounding, but not surprising.
I wish I knew more about this who are trying to think outside the box in a whole systemic way. Has the world ever strategically re-calibrated? I suspect the world will do what is a uniquely hum and personal experience. It will make a bunch of mistakes, collect some regrets and somehow come to a realisation or sense of wisdom once it all washes out. Perhaps that’s what happening with social media at present. We are all getting a bit wise.
Essays like this speed up this process, perhaps we can as a society be a bit like a kid who invests in his super, knows how to organise his days, his relationships, his finances, without spending decades making mistakes first.
Put like that it seems unlikely, but maybe we are smarter now.
